Alternative Finance Lab

The Alternative Finance Lab (AltFinLab) is a UNDP initiative that connects finance, innovation, and emerging technologies to explore, test, and scale new approaches for sustainable development.

Harnessing finance and emerging technologies for sustainable development

The world faces an unprecedented financing challenge. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals requires trillions of dollars in additional investment each year, while public resources alone are insufficient to meet growing social, economic, and environmental needs. At the same time, rapid advances in technology are creating new opportunities to mobilize resources, improve service delivery, and build more inclusive and resilient economies.

The Alternative Finance Lab (AltFinLab) is a UNDP initiative that connects finance, innovation, and emerging technologies to explore, test, and scale new approaches for sustainable development.

AltFinLab works with governments, private sector partners, international organizations, and civil society to navigate this changing landscape. From crowdfunding and alternative finance models to emerging technologies such as blockchain and AI, and digital payments, it explores how new tools, technologies, and partnerships can help mobilize resources, address development challenges, and improve outcomes. Acting as both an enabler and convener, AltFinLab connects knowledge, capabilities, and partners to help move promising ideas from experimentation to adoption and scale.

How we work

Our work is organized around four complementary pillars that help partners explore, apply, and scale alternative finance and emerging technologies.

  • Partnerships

Building partnerships and collaboration models that enable the use and scaling of alternative finance and emerging technologies in development.

We focus on convening and aligning private sector actors, governments, and development partners to address development challenges using alternative finance and emerging technologies. The pillar includes the design of partnership models, funding approaches, and coordination mechanisms that connect ideas, resources, and implementation pathways.

  • Research and intelligence

Generating insight and actionable foresight to support more effective and innovative ways of addressing development challenges.

We produce the knowledge that underpins AltFinLab’s work – from research and analysis to learning from programmes and pilots. This pillar helps organizations understand where new approaches can add value, how they can be applied, and informs strategic, policy, and programming decisions.

  • Capabilities and networks

Building the skills, institutional readiness, and networks needed to understand and apply alternative finance and emerging technologies in development.

We combine training, applied learning, and practitioner networks to help organizations move from understanding to application – strengthening their ability to design and implement new approaches, while enabling ongoing collaboration and knowledge exchange across countries and sectors.

  • Acceleration and scale

Enabling ideas to move from experimentation to adoption and scale using alternative finance and emerging technologies.

We support organizations to test, refine, and apply alternative finance and emerging technologies in development, helping translate promising approaches into practical use. By connecting experimentation with implementation pathways, this work strengthens the ability to design, deploy, and expand solutions, while aligning the actors and resources needed to support their growth.

Our key programmes

Through these initiatives, AltFinLab helps partners build capacity, explore new technologies, mobilize resources, and scale solutions with development impact.

  • The SDG Blockchain Accelerator is a global initiative led by UNDP Alternative Finance Lab (AltFinLab) that helps develop and scale practical solutions powered by blockchain, AI, and other emerging technologies to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Accelerator connects development challenges with vetted technology partners to explore, develop, and implement solutions with the potential to create lasting development impact.

The Accelerator is delivered in strategic partnership with the Blockchain for Good Alliance, alongside leading technology partners across the blockchain and AI ecosystems, including the Cardano Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Partisia Foundation, DFINITY Foundation, and FLock.io.

  • Delivered in partnership with the Algorand Foundation, the Blockchain Academy builds practical skills for applying blockchain to development challenges. Over 1000 participants from 130+ countries have been trained on blockchain for inclusion, transparency, and SDG impact.

  • A joint initiative with the Exponential Science Foundation, the Government Blockchain Academy supports public officials and policymakers understand and deploy blockchain, AI, and frontier technologies to strengthen transparency, digital identity, and climate resilience.

  • Developed with the Stellar Development Foundation, the Digital Financial Inclusion Portfolio tests blockchain-enabled payment solutions in 20+ countries, improving the speed, transparency, and inclusivity of remittances, cash transfers, and social assistance programme.

  • A collaborative network of 1,700+ UN experts working across agencies to share lessons, align policies, and advance responsible blockchain adoption within the UN system. Join the group!

  • A UNDP-convened platform bringing together leaders from the blockchain ecosystem and UNDP to explore responsible, inclusive, and scalable applications of blockchain for sustainable development. Learn more about the launch of the advisory group to explore blockchain for public good.

  • The Crowdfunding Academy is global training programme empowering civil society organizations, institutions, UN agencies, and entrepreneurs to mobilize resources through digital crowdfunding. To date, 60+ campaigns have raised millions for community-driven initiatives around the world.

  • Tadamon is a platform supporting civil society organizations across the Muslim world to deliver impactful, community-led solutions. Through capacity building such as the Tadamon Accelerator, and funding opportunities, Tadamon helps organizations strengthen their work and address challenges related to poverty, education, health, livelihoods, and social inclusion.
