Governance
Transparent public records, verifiable decision trails, and registries that citizens and institutions can trust.
The Government Blockchain Academy is a global initiative that supports governments in understanding, evaluating, and adopting blockchain, while exploring the role of emerging technologies in strengthening blockchain-enabled solutions.
The Government Blockchain Academy (GBA) is a global initiative led by UNDP AltFinLab and the Exponential Science Foundation (ESF) that supports governments in understanding, evaluating, and adopting blockchain, while exploring the role of AI and other emerging technologies in strengthening blockchain-enabled solutions.
The Academy combines practical education, strategic advisory, expert guidance, and solution facilitation to help governments move from understanding blockchain to identifying high-potential public-sector use cases and advancing pilot opportunities aligned with national priorities and institutional needs.
Through the Academy, governments strengthen institutional capacity, engage with trusted blockchain ecosystem partners, and develop practical pathways for responsible adoption and future pilot implementation.
Governments can join through a tailored implementation programme or begin with the self-paced learning platform, available in English and Spanish.
Governments around the world are accelerating digital transformation and exploring how blockchain can improve transparency, strengthen trust, modernise public services, and build more resilient digital public infrastructure. From digital identity and payments to supply chains, registries, and climate action, blockchain is becoming an increasingly important component of government innovation.
Yet many governments still face two common challenges. They often lack practical education designed specifically for the public sector and have limited opportunities to learn from real implementations, engage with trusted experts, and understand how blockchain can address national priorities.
The Government Blockchain Academy addresses these challenges by helping governments understand where blockchain creates public value while providing the knowledge, partnerships, and implementation guidance needed to move from exploration to action.
The Academy gives government teams a structured way to build capability, test ideas with the right experts, and move promising use cases closer to implementation. It is open to ministries, government agencies, regulators, public institutions, digital transformation and innovation teams, policy and strategy teams, and technical and ICT teams supporting government innovation. Designed for governments at every stage of their blockchain journey, the Academy welcomes participants with or without prior blockchain experience, from those building foundational knowledge to those exploring implementation opportunities.
Build a practical understanding of blockchain and related emerging technologies through flexible self-paced learning complemented by live expert sessions and practical discussions.
Discover real public sector use cases, international case studies, and implementation approaches across governance, digital identity, digital payments, supply chains, and climate resilience.
Engage with leading academics, blockchain ecosystem partners, implementation experts, and peer governments through lectures, workshops, and discussions.
Selected governments receive tailored support to identify national priorities, define high-impact use cases, and explore implementation options.
Move beyond learning through solution facilitation, engagement with trusted blockchain ecosystem partners, and continued advisory support that helps governments develop implementation pathways and advance priority use cases towards pilot implementation.
Governments can engage with the Government Blockchain Academy in two ways.
A hands-on programme for selected governments that combines education, government engagement, use-case development, and solution facilitation tailored to national priorities. Participating teams work alongside experts to identify high-impact use cases, weigh implementation options, and build a pathway towards a pilot.
Open access to the Academy’s learning platform, available in English and Spanish, enabling governments to build institutional knowledge, explore practical public sector blockchain use cases, and learn from international experts at their own pace. Academy Access also serves as a pathway for governments interested in joining future tailored implementation programmes.
The Academy runs as a sequence, not a catalogue. Each stage builds on the one before it, from a shared vocabulary through to a pilot aligned with national priorities.
A global convening that sets out the curriculum, the partners involved, and what participating governments can expect.
Recorded learning paired with live expert sessions, so teams build the vocabulary before they build anything else.
Sector sessions across governance, digital identity, payments, supply chains, and climate — grounded in implementations that already exist.
Structured introductions to ecosystem partners and implementation experts, matched to the priorities each government has identified.
Shortlisted use cases are developed into pilot proposals, with advisory support continuing after the programme ends.
