Big data from satellites, mobile phones, and social media, among other tools, allows researchers to build on or replace traditional methods of acquiring socioeconomic data. In his talk for the 2022 Data Science Conference Europe, Dr. Drasko Draskovic discusses the continuous demand for real-time information and the need to reinforce the importance of both traditional and nontraditional datasets. Big data analytics can foster development by providing greater accountability, enabling better policy-making and service delivery, as well as increased business opportunities.
Dr. Drasko Draskovic talks about how collective intelligence can be used to tackle complex development challenges and how it can help to speed up progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Listen to the talk to learn more about how UNDP combines data analytics and human-centered design, and how we test if data resembles what we see on the ground. Finally, Dr. Drasko Draskovic also explores several challenges of big data that UNDP has encountered, with examples of biases encoded in data and algorithms used by big tech companies.
